What You’ll Pay for New Hardwoods
New hardwood floors offer a sleek, clean look and can increase your home’s resale value. This article details the cost of installing new hardwoods.
There are some things to keep in mind though when putting in new hardwoods. The first is that, if you are renovating your home, you will have to have the existing flooring removed and hauled away. Also, you may need to have the subfloor repaired, if there is any damage or it if is out of level.
Before putting in new hardwood floors, you will need to decide on the type of wood and the width of each plank. The two most common types of hardwood flooring are red oak and white oak. After deciding which type of hardwood you would like, decide on how wide you would like it, 2 ¼” or 3 ¼” wide. Hardwood flooring can range from $5.00 to $9.00 per square foot. This includes: Installation, sanding, stain (optional), sealant, finish warranty, and installation warranty. The sealant is Polyurethane and there will be two or three coats of sealant put on depending on which company you choose. the flooring, installation and finishing.
If you were replacing 1,000 square feet, the 2 ¼” red oak or white oak would cost between $4,990 and $7,600. 3 ¼” red oak or white oak would range from $5,290 to $8,350. Hardwoods are a good investment, so you want to choose what would be best for your home.
Shoe molding is another cost to consider. There are two common options for shoe molding: white or stained oak. Most hardwood installers charge from $0.20-$2.00 per linear foot.
Another service that may be included in the price is furniture moving. Many times, the room you are putting the hardwoods in, has heavy furniture. Each company offers that service. If the cost is not included in the overall price, they may charge from $0.25-$0.45 per square foot. This service can be worth every penny especially if you do not have the time or the help to move the furniture.
You also may want to discuss clean up with the company you choose. Some may include it in the price but others may have an additional charge. Once cleaned up, you will have beautiful hardwoods.
